Pinan 1-5
28m
The Pinan kata, also known as Heian, came into Kosho Ryu through the Kyokushinkai system via Bobby Lowe and Thomas Young, with Mitose Sensei encouraging that they be preserved out of respect for Funakoshi and the founders of Okinawan and Japanese karate. This tape introduces the basic motions and transitional movements that run through the Pinan series, with emphasis on the difference between gamae (posture) and dachi (stance) in the Kempo approach. Hanshi Juchnik covers the gedan barai, the elbow position for the lunge punch, the old-style fist formation, the tetsui, ankle rotation, and how hip shifting and weight movement distinguish the Kosho Ryu interpretation from Japanese karate or Kyokushinkai.
